Tampa City Guide: What to Do Beyond the Beach

Tampa is worth your time — a genuinely interesting American city with a downtown waterfront that rivals any in the South, Ybor City, and food that would earn headlines in any city.

Here is something a lot of Gulf Coast visitors don't do: spend time in Tampa. They fly into TPA, drive straight to the beach, and spend the whole trip in Clearwater or St. Pete without ever seeing the city that anchors the whole region. This is understandable — you came for the Gulf, and the Gulf is right there. But Tampa is worth your time.

Ybor City: Historic, Weird, and Worth Every Minute

Ybor City (pronounced EE-bor) is Tampa's historic Latin quarter, originally built by Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who came to work in the cigar factories in the late 1800s. At its peak, Ybor produced more hand-rolled cigars than anywhere else in the world, and the neighborhood that grew up around those factories is still largely intact.

The main drag — 7th Avenue — is lined with historic brick buildings housing restaurants, bars, shops, and still-operating cigar factories where you can watch cigars rolled by hand.

  • Columbia Restaurant — Florida's oldest restaurant (est. 1905), still family-owned, still exceptional. The Spanish bean soup and Cuban sandwich are mandatory. The flamenco show on weekend evenings is a full experience.
  • Tampa Cigar Country — watch hand-rolling in action and buy something to smoke on the beach
  • Ybor City Museum State Park — small but well-done, gives good context for the neighborhood's history
  • 7th Avenue walk — just walk it, look at the buildings, pop into what interests you

Planning a Tampa day trip from your Gulf Coast rental? The Riverwalk & Downtown Waterfront

Tampa's Riverwalk runs 2.5 miles along the Hillsborough River through downtown, connecting museums, parks, restaurants, and residential neighborhoods in a way that makes the city feel human-scaled and navigable on foot. On a nice morning or evening, it's one of the better urban walks in the entire South.

  • Tampa Museum of Art — consistently excellent rotating exhibitions and a strong permanent collection
  • Glazer Children's Museum — one of the best children's museums in Florida, genuinely great for families
  • Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park — the main lawn park where the city hosts outdoor concerts and festivals
  • Armature Works — a converted historic streetcar barn now housing a massive food hall, rooftop bar with river views, and event space; the best single destination for a group with different food preferences

The Florida Aquarium

One of the better medium-sized aquariums in the Southeast. The Florida Aquarium focuses on Gulf of Mexico and Florida ecosystems — mangroves, coral reefs, bays — and does it well. Particularly strong for families and anyone interested in the marine life they're seeing offshore. Budget 2–3 hours.

Busch Gardens Tampa

If you have thrill-seekers in your group, Busch Gardens is worth the detour. The combination of world-class roller coasters with an African-themed animal safari park makes it unique in the theme park world. Go on a weekday if possible. Fall brings HowlScream, the park's Halloween event.

Food Beyond Ybor

  • The Oxford Exchange — a beautifully designed bookshop, restaurant, and event space. Excellent brunch.
  • Heights Public Market — smaller than Armature Works but great food hall in Tampa Heights
  • Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe — one of the most distinctive restaurant experiences in Florida; live music, art-covered walls, Southern-influenced food
  • Ichicoro Ane — exceptional ramen in a small space in Tampa Heights; worth the wait

Getting Between Tampa and the Beach

Tampa is 30–45 minutes from most Gulf Coast beach rentals. Make it a full day trip — arrive around 11am, do Ybor for lunch, hit Armature Works or the Riverwalk in the afternoon, and stay for dinner. You'll leave with a completely different sense of the region than you had when you came.
